The Telluride Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in North America, held annually during Labor Day weekend in Telluride since 1974. Founded by Bill and Stella Pence, Tom Luddy, and James Card of the Eastman-Kodak Film Preserve, TFF was created as an intimate celebration of cinema, positioned strategically after Cannes but before Toronto and New York on the festival calendar.
Unlike most festivals, Telluride maintains an air of mystery by not announcing its program until attendees arrive in town. The festival screens roughly 30 features and 25 shorts, with an informal requirement that films make their North American premiere there. This focus on discovery has made TFF a launching pad for major films and careers — Michael Moore’s Roger and Me, Robert Rodriguez’s El Mariachi, and eventual Oscar winners like Slumdog Millionaire all debuted at Telluride.
Each year, the festival honors three figures with Silver Medallion tributes (often representing past, present, and future influence) and invites a Guest Director to help curate programming. Past Guest Directors include Salman Rushdie, Stephen Sondheim, Alexander Payne, and Alfonso Cuarón. The festival prides itself on being “not a competition, but a celebration,” creating what critics call a “religion” of cinema appreciation.
Executive Director Julie Huntsinger leads TFF alongside the National Film Preserve. The festival expanded for its 40th anniversary in 2013, adding the Werner Herzog Theatre and an extra day of programming. The 53rd edition runs September 4–7, 2026, with passes selling out annually.
