Mountainfilm is one of America’s longest-running documentary film festivals, held annually during Memorial Day weekend in Telluride since 1979. Founded when the former mining town was transitioning into a destination resort, Mountainfilm has evolved into a prestigious Academy Award-qualifying festival that uses documentary storytelling to inspire audiences toward environmental and social action.
The festival screens feature and short documentaries focused on adventure, activism, social justice, environmental issues, and what the organization calls “indomitable spirit.” Programming extends beyond film screenings to include a speaker series called “Minds Moving Mountains,” art and photography exhibitions, outdoor programs, book signings, an ice cream social, and the traditional closing picnic. The festival grounds are adorned with Tibetan prayer flags, a tradition dating to 1994 when the first Moving Mountains Symposium was dedicated to Tibetan freedom.
Mountainfilm attracts filmmakers like Jimmy Chin, who credits the festival with launching his career and calls it “a crucible for storytelling talent.” Each year’s programming is shaped by a Guest Director—past directors include Sophia Bush, Wade Davis, Bill McKibben, and Conrad Anker. For 2026, marine biologist and photographer Cristina “Mitty” Mittermeier will guide the festival’s 48th edition.
The organization extends its impact year-round through Mountainfilm on Tour (screening programs at 150+ global venues annually), Mountainfilm for Students (free K-12 programming), and Commitment Grants for filmmakers and adventurers. Executive Director Sage Martin leads the festival.
