The Durango Independent Film Festival is a five-day celebration of independent cinema held each March in historic downtown Durango, earning recognition as a “Filmmaker’s Festival” for its community engagement and filmmaker hospitality. Founded in 2001, DIFF celebrates its 21st anniversary in 2026, showcasing independent films from around the globe while supporting the Four Corners region’s growing film industry.
DIFF welcomes all genres including adventure, music, animation, nature, comedy, shorts, documentaries, Native cinema, and K-12 student films. The festival screens over 100 films at downtown venues including the Durango Arts Center and Gaslight Twin Cinemas, all within walking distance of restaurants and lodging. Each film receives at least two public screenings, with filmmakers participating in Q&As, Community Coffee Talks, and networking events.
The festival operates through Durango Film, which also houses the Four Corners Film Office to support regional production. DIFF’s REEL Learning School Program brings filmmakers to area schools, reaching over 2,200 students annually. The organization provides selected filmmakers with lodging, festival passes, private event access, and extensive community engagement opportunities.
Notable past guests include Jim Belushi, Mackenzie Astin, and Lindsay Wagner, who have contributed beyond film screenings through concerts and educational visits. The festival operates during spring ski season, offering attendees outdoor activities alongside world-class independent cinema in the picturesque Southwest Colorado setting.
