An 1889 sandstone opera house at the corner of Hyman and Mill in downtown Aspen, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. Built by silver baron Jerome B. Wheeler, gutted by arson fires in 1912, and restored after decades of disuse with a 1984 grand reopening funded by a city Real Estate Transfer Tax. Year-round programming mixes concerts, comedy, opera, lectures, and film. Aspen Film uses the Wheeler as its primary festival venue, and touring stops from Mountainfilm and other regional festivals play here. The auditorium is on the building’s upper floors; confirm elevator access if needed.
